How to Beat the Obesity Crisis

A recent article published in the latest Fitness Queensland magazine, which are the governing body of the fitness industry in Queensland, had some alarming statistics and forecast’s about the obesity and overweight problem we are facing in Australia. In a quote from the article,

“The Australian Government reports that currently more than

• Three million Australians are obese and

• More than seven million Australians are overweight

The total cost of this crisis to the Australian economy – including productivity costs and lost wellbeing- has been estimated at $21 Billion annually.

Even more alarming is the Government’s estimation that by 2020, 75 per cent of Australia’s population will be overweight or obese.” End quote.

With this increase in overweight people there will also be an increase in related medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer and Type11 diabetes. Of course if you pay attention to your lifestyle and exercise regularly you can prevent being overweight or obese and prevent a lot of the related conditions. Here are some other facts that are printed in the article.

• Overall 32.6 per cent of adults were reported as overweight in 2004-05

• 40.5 per cent of males and 24.9 per cent of females were overweight. ( come on guys get off the couch)

• 17.8 per cent of males and 15.1 per cent of females were obese • Overall 16.4 per cent of adults were reported as obese in 2004-05
