Australia’s Expanding Waistline To Cost An Extra $6 Billion.

In a recent article by Phillip Mills published in “Reps”, the official publication of Fitness Australia, he states some alarming statistics about the cost of obesity on our health system.

“In 2008 Melbourne’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute found that Australia’s Expanding Middle-aged waistlines will result in an extra 700,000 cardiovascular related admissions in the next 20 years,” says Mills.

“These highly preventable admissions will conservatively cost in today’s terms an extra $6 billion ($2.9 billion in hospital costs alone) in health care.”

It was estimated last year that four million Australians are obese and another five million are considered overweight. That’s nearly half of our population.

Each year billions gets spent on treating chronic disease, which obesity is classified, without addressing the core problems that are causing the disease in the beginning.

To much junk food, high fat, high salt, high sugar. If your child is used to this kind of diet, they will always crave it in later life.

Not enough exercise. Everyone should aim for a minimum of 30 minutes a day of doing something.

Busy lifestyle. So many people put their job before their health. “I don’t have time to exercise. I work all day.” Busy people need to exercise so they can keep up with their daily routine. There’s 24 hours in a day. 8 are for sleeping. How do you fill in the other 16 hours? Watching tv?

Ultimately you are in charge of your health. If you are overweight, and you don’t have a diagnosed medical condition that is causing it, it’s your fault. You have a choice what you eat. You choose whether to go for a walk or sit on the couch.The reality is that investing in your health now will save you money later and give you a better quality of life. Unless of course you want to be spend your time in the hospital.
