Boxing for Fitness

Boxing is used by many professional athletes in their fitness training and now it is even more popular with the general public. Not only will this style of training increase your cardiovascular fitness, increase muscle endurance and promote weight loss it will also increase your speed, power and balance.

Over the years much research has been done on the advantages of this style of fitness over other recreational activities.

Here are some of the results.

10 minutes of skipping can equate to 30 minutes of light jogging.

A 60 minute session can expend an average of 2821kj. Equivalent to running 9km on a treadmill.

A light to moderate intensity session can expend between 354 to 1035 calories per hour compared to:

Stationary exercise bike: 295 to 604 Calories, Aerobics class: 354 to 604 Calories.

Other benefits are there is low impact on your joints but high intensity. It is high energy and therefore high calorie expenditure in a short period of time. It is adaptable to aerobic and anaerobic training. It is time effective. It can build self confidence, can be challenging and requires focus and thinking.

With all these benefits it’s easy to see why this training has become so popular with fitness professionals and amateurs alike. It is a great cross training exercise that will compliment any other sport or activity. Of course there is always a risk of injury so make sure your instructor has some sort of accreditation in this field, before you proceed.
